About the work

Portrait of an American crocodile thriving in the mangrove swamps and coastal waters of this pristine marine protected area rich in biodiversity and a unique ecosystem

Location -Jardines de la Reina, Cuba.

Artist statement

The underwater world gives me an escape and peace from busy surgery life — a place of beauty and calm that restores me for life in dentistry. The challenges, skill and precise approach required for underwater photography often overlap with the technical needs of dentistry.

The artist

Catherine Holmes

Dental surgeon, underwater photographer and watercolour artist. Over 40 years in practice with her own family practice and three children. Her photography has been recognised at Underwater Photographer of the Year (2026 & 2025 Coral Reef category winner), Ocean Photographer of the Year 2025 (Highly Commended, Hope category), European Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2023, and first place in the Conservation category at the International Ocean Art competition.
