About the work
In this piece, the bird settles lightly amongst blossoms, its presence gentle, almost weightless. It is only a fleeting moment till she takes off again. Even the most transient moments hold a sense of arrival if we allow ourselves to notice them.
“A Quiet Bloom” is a collection of spring paintings exploring gentle moments in nature. I am drawn to the in-between: the pause, the hush, the subtle movements that often go unnoticed. Using layered washes of watercolour, impressionistic brushstrokes and a colour palette befitting spring, I do not aim to capture the subject perfectly, but I paint the feeling of being present within them
Each piece is intentionally small and intimate, an invitation to come closer and to engage in a moment of quiet observation, to slow down, to notice softness and to reconnect with the gentle beauty of the natural world. I would also like to give credit to my lovely teacher and mentor, Alicia Aradilla and Marty from storm lamp studios whom these works have been inspired by
The artist

Dr Palwasha Rafi
Dentist and painter whose creative work emphasises presence, gentleness and attentiveness to overlooked moments. Palwasha began painting regularly in 2017 during her final years of dental school as a form of self-care. Inspired by Impressionism — particularly Monet's later works — she uses simple materials and paints for enjoyment rather than outcome. 'Everyone is creative,' she says. 'You don't need a studio or expensive materials.'

Returning Light

In this piece, the start of spring; the warmth begins to return after the short, dark days of winter and the landscape slowly awakens. It is not a sudden change but a gradual unfolding- light gathering, colour reappearing. This work reflects the reassurance of renewal, the quiet persistence of light, even after the longest seasons of darkness
